Egyptian Ambassador Ahmed Hussein today sought concessions from the State Department as a precondition for the release of the Israel freighter “Bat Galim,” according to informed sources here.
The Ambassador, who met with Robert D. Murphy, Deputy Under Secretary of State was said to have asked the United States to “ease tensions” involving Egypt and Israel if the ship is to be set free.
The exact nature of steps Egypt wants the United States to take could not be immediately determined, but apparently Egypt is seeking a formula by which it can release the ship and at the same time “save face” on the home front. The interview with Mr. Murphy was requested by the Egyptian Ambassador.
