The imminent liquidation of 33 Jewish communities in North African villages in the Atlas Mountains through immigration to Israel, was announced here today by the Jewish Agency.
All inhabitants of these communities, except hard-core cases, will be removed to the Jewish State. The hard-core cases will be cared for by the Moroccan Jewish community and the Joint Distribution Committee, which have agreed to the arrangement, the Agency said.
Meanwhile, a new settlement was inaugurated at Pkiin, in Upper Galilee, today for Jewish immigrants from North Africa who arrived in Israel only 10 days ago.
Present at the ceremony were Israel President Itzhak Ben Zvi and Mrs. Irma Lindheim, former member of Hadassah who is now a resident of the Mishmar Haamek settlement, who 25 years ago donated $25,000 for the establishment of a settlement on the ancient site of Pkiin. For a variety of reasons, the settlement was not established until today. Also present at the ceremony were leaders of nearby Arab and Druze settlements.
