Council of Jewish Women Hears Report on Shortage of Teachers in Israel

A national emergency in education exists in Israel today because of the extreme shortage of teachers and lack of candidates for the teaching profession, Dr. Michael Evenari, vice president of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reported to officials of the National Council of Jewish Women. The Council supports the University’s Department of Secondary and Higher Education. There are at present only 17,000 elementary and secondary school teachers in Israel, but there is need for at least twice that number, Dr. Evenari reported.
