SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

The Communist Bulgarian regime was accused today by Israel of reneging on a promise to pay compensation for the 58 El Al plane passengers killed when the airplane was shot down over Bulgaria two years ago.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the latest Bulgarian proposal suggested direct contributions to next of kin of the victims, with Bulgaria refusing to accept negotiations and without compensation for the plane valued at more than one million dollars. The spokesman called the proposal “quite unacceptable.”
