The Board of Deputies of British Jews has a plan drafted for countering the Arab boycott and is waiting only until it understands the wishes of the Israel Government in this matter to begin “fighting like the devil” against the Arab economic campaign against Israel and Jewish businessmen everywhere.
In a report to a meeting of the Board today, John Dight, chairman of the Jewish Defense Committee, said that any action taken must be with an “eye to what Israel would wish to have done or not done.” He indicated understanding for the difficulties involved for any government in such circumstances.
Barnett Janner, president of the Board, hailed developments in Communist satellite countries such as the resumption of contact with Hungarian Jewry and the Polish Government’s agreement to allow resumption of JDC and ORT activities. He said that although anti-Semitism was deep-routed among the Polish people and acts of discrimination had occurred on local levels, he had no reason to doubt the goodwill of the Polish Government.
Mr. Janner announced that a projected meeting of national Jewish organizations promoted by Dr. Nahum Goldmann had been postponed because a number of groups which would like to attend could not do so on the scheduled date–November 3. It is likely, he said, that the meeting would now take place in Rome during January.
