Martin Knittler, former S. S. supervisor at the Sachsen-hausen concentration camp, committed suicide last night in a prison cell here where he was awaiting trial on charges of having tortured and murdered Jews and other camp inmates.
Knittler, captured by the Russians at the end of World War II, was tried by them and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was subsequently turned over to the German authorities on condition they try him for war crimes.
