World Jewry is Spending $75,000,000 a Year on Education, Expert Says

World Jewry Is spending $75,000,000 a year on Jewish education, with $1,000,000 of that sum spent by the Jewish Agency, Israel Melvan, director of the Jewish Agency Department for Education and Culture in the Diaspora, said here today.

Mr. Melvan reported that there were 300 full time Jewish schools in the free world, plus Talmud Torah and adult evening classes. He said that the United States had the highest percentage of Jewish schools and that 33 percent of all Jewish children outside of Israel were receiving some form of Jewish education.

The Jewish Agency official estimated a worldwide shortage of 5,000 Jewish teachers. adding that this problem was particularly acute in Latin America.
