The 14th annual conference of the Israel Exploration Society opened here with 1,200 Israeli scholars and archaeologists, some of them with world-wide reputations, in attendance. The opening lecture on Galilee in the Canaanite era was delivered by Prof. Benjamin Mazer, president of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
