A $300, 000 contract for translation of Russian scientific literature into English was signed here today by the United States National Science Foundation and the Israel National Research Fund.

About 70 Israeli academicians at Hebrew University, the Weizmann Institute and the Technion at Haifa, will be engaged in the work, as well as other Israeli scientists and post-graduate students of East European origin. The $300, 000 is for one year’s work, with other annual contracts to follow.

Israeli scientists welcome the project as one more effort toward world coordination of knowledge, and as an opportunity to acquaint scholars here with the work of scientists in Russia in the fields of medicine, agriculture, chemistry and electronics.

Two representatives of the United States Science Foundation, now visiting here, will proceed next week to Eastern Europe to seek more translators. Experts in the United States and in Western Europe, the Americans said today, are unable to cope with the vast volume of Soviet scientific material needing translation into English.
