The cornerstone for the first synagogue to serve the new Jewish quarter here, was laid today in the presence of the Minister for Religious Affairs, Rabbi Yaacov Toledano and Mayor Amin Jarjoura of Nazareth.

The Jewish quarter currently houses several thousand new immigrants and some government officials. During the High Holy Days this year, services were held in temporary quarters. Speaking at today’s ceremony, Rabbi Toledano stressed that the construction of the Nazareth synagogue–the first in 2,000 years–symbolized brotherhood and peace between the three religions which meet here.
