Mayor Robert F, Wagner today told two Israeli newspaper publishers, here to attend the 13th annual Congress of the International Federation of Newspaper Publishers, that he plans to visit Israel next November. The two Israelis are Pinhas Leibovitz, secretary-general of the Newspaper Publishers Association of Israel; and Yehiel Eliash, director-general of the Israeli daily newspaper, “Hatzofe. “
The Israelis were among 100 newspaper publishers from 13 countries attending the publishers’ congress being held all this week here. They said they were gratified by the unanimous vote of protest today at the Congress of the International Federation of Newspaper Publishers against the nationalization this morning by the United Arab Republic of 13 of Egypt’s major daily newspapers.
The Israeli publishers pointed out that normally, resolutions are considered and acted on at the end of the Congress proceedings. The condemnation of the UAR action was directed to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
Mr. Leibovitz told the delegates that freedom of the press in Egypt died when President Nasser took power. Speaking briefly on press conditions in Israel, he said that freedom of the press was limited in his country only by security considerations.
