Telephone Directory to Use Caution in Listing Restaurants As ‘kosher’

Chicago’s classified telephone directory will discontinue listing restaurants as “kosher” unless such eating places meet “proper rabbinic standards,” it was announced here today by the publishers of that directory.

The statement was made after Joseph, R. Friedman, chairman of the Council of Traditional Synagogues of Greater Chicago, protested that the listings identified as “kosher” certain restaurants that had not been approved as such by the proper rabbinic authority.

Mr. Friedman also protested against the use of the term “kosher style,” pointing out that “there is no such thing.” He called attention to an Illinois State law which prohibits any firm or service to advertise itself as kosher “unless it has proper rabbinic authority.”
