France to Establish Ministry for Integration of Algerian Refugees

French President Charles de Gaulle decided today to name a special Minister for Repatriates who will prepare a plan for integrating into the French economy the more than 500,000 Algerian refugees–including 100,000 Jews–now living in France. Alain Peyrefitte, State Secretary for Information, is expected to take over the new ministry next week.

Plans for rehabilitating the refugees have failed to yield results so far with the majority of the former Algerian residents still jobless. In addition, thousands of families lack adequate housing for the coming winter and much hardship is feared.

Meanwhile, the establishment of an association for organizing the emigration of refugees was announced here today. The first groups are expected to be relocated early in 1964. Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Canada and Australia have expressed an interest in receiving immigrants from among the Algerian refugees.
