Groundbreaking ceremonies were held here for a new Jewish school and community center building to be financed by the local Jewish community and the Conference for Jewish Material Claims Against Germany through the Joint Distribution Committee.

Taking part in the ceremonies were representatives of the Florence Municipality, the Israel Embassy, the JDG and Union of Italian Jewish Communities. Construction of the Jewish school is in line with recent efforts to reconstruct Jewish school buildings throughout Italy with the aid of the Claims Conference and locally raised funds and to attract more Jewish children and intensify studies in Jewish subjects, especially Hebrew.

There are a total of 2, 200 Jewish children throughout Italy attending Jewish kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools in addition to those enrolled in Ort’s vocational schools and those attending special Talmud Torah courses.
