NEW YORK (Oct. 20)
Some 250 clerical and professional employees of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Greater New York went on strike this weekend, seeking a union shop and other improvements in their contract, which expired last June 30.
In a statement issued by the Federation, the agency pointed out that it was campaigning to raise funds for 116 local hospitals and health and welfare institutions caring for 1,000,000 persons. The statement said the strike came without official notification after many weeks of negotiation. The New York State mediators, Julius Manson and Vincent McDonnell called a meeting today with negotiators for the Federation and the union, in an effort to settle the dispute.
