The official Hesse state reward for the capture of Dr. Josef Mengele, the “selection doctor” at the Auschwitz death camp rose to $15,000 today at the same time that a prosecutor charged that Dr. Mengele has visited his hometown in West Germany at least once without being detected.
The charge was made by the prosecutor in the trial in Frankfurt of 22 former personnel of the Auschwitz camp. He also accused Paraguay of providing a refugee for Mengele. Asserting that Dr. Mengele, who disappeared from Germany in the early 1950’s, was now in Asuncion, the prosecutor said he was convinced that the protection for Dr. Mengele “comes from the highest levels of the Paraguayan government.”
