Prominent leaders of the Jewish community here, and Israel’s Consul General, were among prominent personalities participating in special services at the Main Synagogue here today, marking the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Paris, after four years of occupation by the Nazis. The services also included at the recitation of the Kaddish in memory of the countless Jews of Paris who were deported and put to death in Nazi extermination camps.

Also commemorating the city’s liberation was a special ceremony in which the Jewish Senator and Socialist leader, Leo Hammon, and ten other French national heroes, were decorated by President Charles de Gaulle as Commanders of the Legion of Honor. Johanan Meroz, Israel’s charge d’affaires, was among those present at the ceremony.
