Guide to Funerals Adopted for Members of Conservative Synagogues

A guide to Jewish funeral practices has been adopted by the board of directors of the United Synagogue of America for the use of members of Conservative synagogues.

The guide recommends that each congregation establish a burial committee along the lines of the traditional “Hevra Kadisha” to assist families in funeral arrangements. Among practices which the guide disapproves of are embalming, ostentatious coffins, viewing the dead person and floral displays.
