Download PDF for this date

Arthur Naftalin, the first Jewish Mayor in Minneapolis history, was elected to an unprecedented third term by an overwhelming vote.

The American Jewish World, local English-Jewish weekly, hailed the mayor as a political heir “of our renowned beloved Hubert Humphrey, who preceded Arthur Naftalin as mayor of this city by some 20 years.” The weekly said that Mayor Naftalin “has helped make Minneapolis one of the most progressive, enlightened, best-governed municipalities in the Middle West.”
