The Council of the Jewish Community of Morocco met here this week for the first time since November, to discuss the filling of the vacancy in the post of Grand Rabbi. The position has been open since last December’s resignation of Grand Rabbi Saul Danan.

The Ministry of the Interior now wishes to fill the position of Grand Rabbi, with the incumbent being recognized as the spiritual leader of the Jewish community. However, it is not known, as yet, whether the new Grand Rabbi will be appointed by the Interior Ministry, after consulation with leaders of the Jewish community, or the Government will allow the Jewish community to elect its own Grand Rabbi. These issues and the candidacies were discussed at the Council meeting, but no announcement was made as to whether any decision had been made by the Jewish leaders.
