Tunisia formally broke off diplomatic relations today with Egypt. The two countries have been at odds for years over questions of Arab world leadership and the Israeli issue. The announcement followed a meeting of the Tunisian Cabinet in Tunis.

Tunisia’s President Habib Bourguiba shocked the Arab world two years ago and since with repeated public calls for a peaceful settlement of the Arab-Israeli dispute, specifically urging the Arab rulers to agree to negotiate directly with Israel for a peace agreement.
