President Habib Bourguiba of Tunisia appeared on the radio and television yesterday to issue a stern warning against mob attacks on Tunisian Jews and Jewish property.
The Tunisian president denounced the incidents and gave orders that they must cease, adding that all such demonstrations would be halted “by every means available to the power of the state.”
The World Jewish Congress office here sent a cable of appreciation to President Bourguiba for his condemnation of “outrages committed against your Jewish citizens who rely for protection on your sense of Justice, as demonstrated by your intention to punish all culprits.”
The Tunisian Government formally apologized today to the Jewish community and said that “the hooligans” who sacked the Jewish quarter in Tunis yesterday did not represent the Tunisian people or Government. Special police units were detailed to the section to guard it.
