The British Government said today that the fate of the Jews remaining in Arab lands was a matter of “continued concern” to Her Majesty’s Government which will “continue to do all in their power to discourage and prevent” their imprisonment without trial, deprivation of property and denial of human rights and freedom. The Government pledge was made in a letter to the British Section of the World Jewish Congress in response to a resolution recently adopted by the organization.
The Foreign Office letter noted that the British Government supported a proposed convention to eliminate the statute of limitations on war crimes and crimes against humanity and declared that the Government was considering ratification of the international convention on elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
The plight of the Jews in the Arab countries will be considered by the annual general meeting of the United Nations Association which is to open in Edinburgh on April 5. A resolution calling for international action to protect these people is on the agenda of the meeting.
