Jewish Agency Official Says Youth Aliya Seeks to Raise U.S. Orphans in Israel

The treasurer of the Jewish Agency disclosed here yesterday that contacts have been made to bring the wards of Jewish orphanages in the United States to Israel for upbringing under the Youth Aliya program. Arye Dultzin said the initiative was taken by Yosef Kiarman, head of Youth Aliya. Mr. Dultzin also revealed that the Jewish Agency was considering charging immigrants from Western countries for part of their board and lodging at immigrant absorption centers. He said that the Western newcomers, as distinct from hardship cases, were usually able to pay for their own keep. He agreed with members of his audience who said it would be a pity to risk turning “good raw material into shnorrers (beggars) so early.”
