Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim was rebuked by an unidentified Cabinet Minister at a Cabinet meeting today for delivering too sweeping an attack on Pope Paul VI for the latter’s letter of sympathy to President Helou. The minister said that while the Pope may have deserved criticism, Rabbi Nissim made too sweeping a generalization when he accused the Pontiff and the Vatican of conducting an extensive campaign against the Jewish religion and Jewish people. The Jerusalem Post suggested editorially that Rabbi Nissim “overreacted.”
