Iraq and Syria Sign Defense Pact, Iraqi Delegation Visits Cairo

Iraq and Syria signed a defense agreement and a delegation from Iraq arrived today in Cairo for meetings with Egyptian military officials, it was reported here today. Baghdad Radio said the defense agreement was signed in Baghdad. The broadcast said it was hoped the pact would lead to unity among “all Arab nations.”

The Iraqi delegation to Egypt was headed by Hardan Takriti who is Vice Premier and Defense Minister. The radio said he was invited by Gen. Mahmoud, Egyptian Defense Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. The main topic on the Cairo agenda was said to be increased coordination on the Arab western and eastern fronts. Egyptians are on the west, Iraq, Jordan and Syria on the east. Iraq has based some 10,000 troops in Jordan and another 6,000 in Syria.
