JERUSALEM (Sep. 25)
A last minute change on the Labor Party-Mapam alignment election list has placed the name of Deputy Premier Yigal Allon directly after that of Premier Golda Meir. Originally Foreign Minister Abba Eban had the number two spot on the list which was arranged alphabetically according to the Hebrew alphabet.
As of last night’s deadline, 16 factions submitted lists to the Knesset elections committee. Four of them were new political groupings including one headed by former Premier David Ben-Gurion. Another, calling itself the Eretz Israel list, is headed by Dr. Israel Eldad, a leader of the underground Stern group during the latter years of the British mandate. It advocates Israel’s retention of all occupied Arab territories.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Peace List headed by Gad Yatziv, a lecturer at the Hebrew University, who wants Israel to hand over the occupied territories to a “Palestinian nation.” The fourth new list is called Young Israel and is composed of Sephardic candidates who hope to win votes on the basis of their Oriental origin. Two other new lists were not accepted by the elections committee because they failed to deposit the $1,600 bond required by law. Factions which fail to poll one percent of the vote forfeit the bond which reverts to the Israel treasury.
