The two-hour meeting this afternoon between Israel’s Premier Golda Meir and President Nixon was described as “a useful and satisfactory discussion” on Mideast affairs by Ronald Ziegler, White House press secretary. He told newsmen that the two leaders “discussed the need for further diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement, and, in particular, they explored specifically how the United States and Israel could contribute to such efforts.”
Ziegler emphasized that “this was not a joint statement” and that Nixon and Mrs. Meir “agreed that the specific nature of their discussion would be confidential.” Ziegler said, however, that Nixon repeated the assurances that the US would not permit the military balance to shift against Israel, and confirmed that the US would continue to maintain the ongoing relationship of financial arrangements for military supplies.
