JERUSALEM (Jan. 10)
Prof. Hanokh Albeck, a leading Talmudic authority, died here last night at age 82. His most famous and most popular work was the first complete edition of the Mishna with vocal signs, making it understandable to persons without a strong knowledge of Hebrew. Known as a “scholar’s scholar,” he had headed the Talmud Department at the Hebrew University for many years. Prof. Albeck was born in Lowicz, Poland, in 1890, and was ordained as a rabbi in 1907. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1921 and migrated to Palestine in 1936. His Talmudic professorship at Hebrew U. began in 1936.
