The Chief Rabbinate Council appealed to the Cabinet today to reverse its decision to abolish censorship for Israel’s legitimate theater. The Cabinet voted 7-5 Sunday in favor of submitting legislation to the Knesset that would free stage productions from the requirement of obtaining a license from the censorship board.
The Orthodox rabbis claimed that the decision would lead to a “terrible moral decline” and demanded that censorship should be tightened “in these times when permissiveness is eating away at the vitals of our society.” The Chief Rabbinate Council also sent a message of condolences to the family of the late President Lyndon B. Johnson. The message referred to Mr. Johnson as “a righteous gentile.”
