JERUSALEM (Apr. 2)
The Cabinet has approved the creation of an ecological unit within the Prime Minister’s Office and the establishment of a medical school attached to Negev University in Beersheba. The ecological unit, which won unanimous endorsement, was described as a “service for the protection of the quality of the environment.”
Its functions will include advising government bodies and planning-authorities on environmental problems and the preparation of “environmental impact statements” in conjunction with the National Council for Planning and Construction. It will also collect and disseminate material from Israel and abroad on ecology and related issues. The unit will employ scientists and social scientists. Its director will be appointed by the Prime Minister.
