Norway has approached Syria concerning the release of Israeli prisoners taken during the Yom Kippur War, government officials said here Thursday. A government note expressing concern for the plight of the Israeli POWs was delivered to Syria’s UN Ambassador, Haisam Kelani, at a meeting Wednesday with Norway’s permanent UN representative, OLe Aalgaard. The note expressed Norway’s “humanitarian concern” and “called Syria’s attention to Geneva Convention rules.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Torleiv Anda said here. Kelani promised to deliver the note to his government, Anda said. “The Syrian Ambassador reacted positively and voiced respect for the Norwegian government’s humanitarian views,” Anda said.
