ROME (Apr. 16)
Pope Paul VI has called for “juridical protection” of holy places in the Middle East and a “statute providing for international guarantees for the Holy City of Jerusalem.” The Pope has referred to international guarantees for Jerusalem and holy sites on many previous occasions but has not employed the word “protection” in this respect in the past, observers noted.
(In Tel Aviv, Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren received a reply yesterday from Pope Paul to a letter he had written regarding the recent murders of four Jewish women in Syria. The reply, conveyed by the Papal representative, Pio Laggi, said “Pope Paul VI would like to inform the Chief Rabbi that he is doing everything in his power for this humanitarian goal of safeguarding human rights in Syria.”)
