Israeli forces completed the second phase of disengagement with Syria today when they withdrew from the central and largest portion of Syrian territory captured during the Yom Kippur War. With all military equipment removed from the area, the last Israeli troops paraded with drum and bugle corps past a reviewing post on a hilltop near Tel Shams where their commanding officer, Gen. Raphael Eitan, took their salute. Gen. Eitan said that the enemy officers and soldiers who fought in this region now know full well the ability of the Israeli army and that in itself may become a major deterrent to a new war.
