The European Parliament meeting this week in Strasbourg called for the surrender to French authorities of former Nazi Klaus Barbie, the “butcher of Lyons.” Barbie was gestapo chief in Lyons and was sentenced to death in absentia by a French court in 1952 for the torture and murder of hundreds of resistance workers, including Jews. He is believed to be living in Paraguay under an assumed name. The Parliament also approved a resolution that also asks all countries to identify “persons guilty of war crimes committed during the armed conflicts of the past.”
