President Ford expressed optimism today, at a press conference here, that “despite the difficulties…we can find a way to keep a peace movement moving” in the Middle East. Without mentioning the Mideast, the President said that “in any case where the United States does not live up to its moral obligations, it can have an adverse impact on our allies.” He added that the U.S. is “going to stand behind our allies.” Listing the Middle East, along with Greece, Portugal and Turkey as areas in which U.S. diplomacy is having problems, he said during the question period. “If Congress joins me, and the American people and Congress support me as President, we can overcome these difficulties.”
