AMSTERDAM (Jul. 22)
The Dutch Minister of Justice, Andries van Agt, and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Limburg were among the numerous personalities who attended last week the first performance of this year’s “Passion Play” in the village of Telegalen. The play claims to describe the sufferings of Christ at the hands of the Jews.
The play, written in 1931 by the Roman Catholic priest and poet, Jacques Schreurs, is performed every five years by the 300 local villagers and draws thousands of spectators. Based on the “Passion Play” at Oberammergau in Bavaria, it will be performed for 12 consecutive Sundays.
