RIO DE JANEIRO (Sep. 12)
Mrs. Ida Portnoi of Sau Paulo was reelected president of the Pioneer Women’s Organization in Brazil at the sixth national convention of the organization, which has changed its name to Na’amat, an acronym in Hebrew for Nashim Ovdot Umitnadvot (Working Women and Volunteers). The name of the group was changed earlier this month in Israel.
Mrs. Leah Rabin, who took part in the convention held in Sao Paulo, attended by some 300 delegates, told reporters that she was not “forbidden by my husband to talk politics, so you may ask.” In response to questions about the role of women in Israel, she said that Israeli women must still fight for equality, although by law they have the same rights as men. In practice, however, women are not equal, she said.
