The first evidence of the positive outcome of the meetings between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Premier Menachem Begin in Alexandria last month became apparent last week when, for the first time ever, Israeli trucks drove across the border direct to Cairo. Till now, the Egyptians had not allowed Israeli vehicles to drive on Egyptian roads, saying that no foreign cars or trucks are allowed in Egypt.
Goods between Israel and Egypt had to be transshipped from Israeli to Egyptian vehicles at the El Arish border crossing point, and vice versa. But following a brief meeting officials at El Arish at the beginning of last week, and acting on instructions following the Begin-Sadat meeting, the first Israeli trucks were allowed to cross with goods destined for the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.
