Envoy Says Arabs Want U.S. to Be Mediator in Arab-israel Conflict

Samuel Lewis, the United States Ambassador to Israel, stressed last night that the Arabs want the U.S. to be a mediator in the Arab-Israel conflict because they know the U.S. is a close friend of Israel.

“Neither side really wants the U.S. to be neutral and we are anything but neutral,” Lewis told some 2,000 persons at Baltimore’s Convention Center as he received the 1983 Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award from the Baltimore district of the Zionist Organization of America. ZOA national president Alleck Resnick, who is from Baltimore presented the award at the local group’s 40th annual donor dinner. Israel’s Ambassador Meir Rosenne also participated in the dinner. He was introduced by Eugene Silberman, president of the Baltimore ZOA.
