News Brief

Pope John Paul paid tribute to the Jews of his Polish hometown during a visit there Wednesday as part of his trip to his native land. Many Jewish residents of Wadowice were “killed in ghettos and then in camps, because of extermination acts of the Hitler regime,” he said. The pontiff also speculated about the wartime fate of other Jews he knew as a child, including a boyhood friend and his family’s landlord.
