Rabbi Julia Neuberger is to become the first female rabbi — and the second rabbi of either gender — to serve in Britain’s House of Lords. A health care activist, Neuberger joins the upper chamber of the United Kingdom’s legislature for the Liberal Democrat Party.

The director general of Britain’s central Jewish group said he would retire after 13 years in the top job. The Board of Deputies’ Neville Nagler, a former civil servant, is widely acknowledged as British Jewry’s central spokesman in representations to the government, international bodies and the media in all matters outside of religious issues.
