Libya released six medical workers it had held for eight years on charges of involvement in an Israeli plan to poison Libyan children with AIDS.

French negotiators brokered Tuesday’s release of the five Bulgarians and a Palestinian, which reportedly came in exchange for more than $400 million, about $1 million for each of the children infected.

Human rights groups said the imprisonment was a farce and that the children were infected because of poor sanitary conditions at clinics.
