A student at Volgograd State University in Russia was knocked unconscious by a group of neo-Nazis.
The skinheads beat him for accidentally bumping into one of them and carved a swastika on his chest, according to a Nov. 16, 2007 article in the local newspaper “Volgogradskaya Pravda.”
The student was walking to class when he accidentally bumped into a young man whom he described as a “skinhead.” Seven or eight neo-Nazis then attacked the student, knocking him to the ground and kicking him until he lost consciousness. He sustained many injuries, including a swastika carved on his chest.
The article made no mention of the student’s ethnicity. Nickolai Butkevich, research and advocacy director for the Union of Councils for Jews in the Former Soviet Union, said it is likely that the victim “is an ethnic Russian who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
A local police official was quoted in the article saying that neo-Nazis do exist in the city, but that police actions alone are not sufficient to address the problem
