Pe’er, Sela advance in Australia

Israelis Shachar Pe’er and Dudi Sela advanced to the second round of the Australian Open.

Two other Israelis, Tzipi Obziler and Harel Levy, were eliminated Monday in the Grand Slam event in Melbourne.

Pe’er, the No. 17 seed, defeated the Czech Republic’s unseeded Renata Voracova, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Pe’er, 20,   will face Australia’s Jessica Moore, who moved past the first round for the first time in three attempts.

 

Sela, 22 and unseeded, advanced by beating Austrian qualifier Martin Slanar, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. Sela will meet Croatian Ivo Karlovic, the No. 20 seed.

Russia’s Elena Dementieva, the No. 11 seed, ousted Obziler, 6-2, 6-2. Italy’s Andreas Seppi eliminated Levy, a qualifier, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.
