A Lakewood, N.J., man who may have pretended to be a religious Jew was arrested last month on charges of passport fraud.

Ted Riley Floyd was arrested by federal authorities Feb. 21 on charges that he was lying about his identity, the Asbury Park Press reported. Floyd, who had been using the name Nathan James Levi, was living in the Orthodox community in Lakewood, N.J. Authorities said he was not Jewish.

At a hearing this week, a federal judge determined that Floyd was lying about his identity and ordered him detained. That prompted a headline on an Orthodox blog saying a non-Jewish man had been found living in Lakewood’s Orthodox community.

According to the Asbury Park Press, there is “no indication” that Floyd is not Jewish.
