The National Jewish Democratic Council postponed its annual conference due to the extended primary campaign.

The battle between U.S. Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for the party’s presidential nomination made it difficult to attract major figures to the conference planned for May 5 – the same week critical primaries are being held in North Carolina and Indiana. Instead the conference will take place in September.

Party insiders had expected a clear front-runner by February.

“This will allow us to have the first opportunity to effectively showcase the Democratic presidential candidate in front of a Jewish audience,” a council statement said.
