Israel Boosts Forces After Evacuation

Israel boosted security forces throughout the West Bank in the wake of the evacuation of settlers from a Hebron building.

About 500 police were positioned around the West Bank city, where 600 settlers live among more than 150,000 Palestinians. About 35 settlers and soldiers were hurt during the evacuation Thursday; separately, settlers threw stones at and fired on Palestinians, injuring 17.

In one case, witnesses said settlers attempted to burn a houseful of Palestinians, until a group of journalists helped the Palestinian family flee.

To deter retaliation, Israeli authorities banned the entry of Palestinian men under 45 into Jerusalem for Friday prayers at the Al-Aqsa mosque.
