ROME (JTA) — Rome’s mayor favors granting honorary citizenship to the eternal city to captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
During a public menorah-lighting ceremony Sunday, Mayor Gianni Alemanno said the proposal, put forward by Rome Jewish Community President Riccardo Pacifici, seemed like "an excellent idea."
Alemanno added that he wanted to extend the honor "to give a sign of solidarity to the Jewish community."
