As many foundations are cutting back grants, the Eli and Edyth Broad Foundation, one of the country’s largest foundations with Jewish roots, keeps making news with sizable grants.
In the past week I have seen the following:
- A $2.5 million grant to help two New York City charter school systems, according to the Times. (Not the move to help build Hebrew charter schools.)
- A $450,000 grant over four years to the Julliard School of Music’s program to advance its program to give access to the school’s music training program for minorities. That grant is meant to spur a $1.5 million fund raising initiative, according to the LA Times.
- A $450,000-plus grant to the Detroit Public School system to help review the school district’s financial situation. Eli Broad was a graduate of Detroit Central High School, reports the Detroit News.
- The foundation also just named the finalists for its annual $2 million grant to help urban school districts.
